2017 Pioneertown Ride Fundraiser
3rd Annual Event
Welcome to the 3rd Annual Bike for Bender Pioneertown Fundraiser Ride.
This ride starts at the Pioneertown Sound Stage and takes you 35 (or 50) miles across the desert floors and valleys, up steep and rocky jeep roads, and straight up into the heart of the San Bernardino Mountains up to Big Bear. In Yucca Valley, you pass through a variety of ecozones starting with long stretches of Joshua Tree laden paths and then you work your way up scenic jeep and mining roads to the snow capped mountains at 7000ft.
The climb up is a grueling 3-4hr, 3500/5500ft grinder that is not for the faint of heart! In some areas the sand is deep, the rocks are big, and there are some “hike-a-bike” sections. You can expect snow, ice and mud at high elevations. The good news is that after the climb, you’ll hit the turn around point at 17.5 (or 25) miles and you’ll enjoy miles of fast and pedal-free descending all the way back.
The nasty (Fun) jeep section will be optional. You technical riders will love it!
What could be more fun than hanging out at an old cowboy and western film town, camping, bbqing and doing an epic ride with your friends? And who knows, Tinker may just show up again!
Giddyup 50 – 9:00 AM Start, ~50 miles, ~5500ft climbing, difficult – very difficult
Rawhide 35 – 9:00 AM Start, ~35 miles, ~3500ft climbing, moderate
*Aid stations at mile 17.5 and 25/33

The Perfect Bike?
There is no perfect bike for this ride! Cross-bikes will fly on the fast, flowing fireroads. Mountain bikes will cruise by you in the sandy sections. And all-mountain bikes will blow everyone away on the fast but super-gnarly jeep roads headed out of the mountains. Choose your weapon wisely!
A Piece of Mountain Bike History
Over 20 years ago, Tom Spiegel and our friends at Team Big Bear founded this ride. There have been a number of variations over time, but riders would take a bus up to Onyx Peak or Big Bear where they would endure the snowy mountain roads and steep rocky descents to the desert floor of Pioneertown. In other years, they would simply start at Pioneertown, concur the dreaded climb into the mountains, and then loop their way back. At the end, while waiting for the other riders to arrive, Tom and the gang would host an assortment of games such as tire tosses, slow bike races and other wrangler-related fun. Hundreds of riders came out and after a number of years, this ride became a concrete part of SoCal mountain bike history.
Pioneertown is a small town in Yucca Valley that used to house actors in the 1940’s to film Western movies. Most of the rustic town is still intact and Pappy & Harriet’s, a saloon-style restaurant, is one of the most popular places around. Along with great food and beer, they are famous for hosting amazing music entertainers and talent on the weekends. Most weekends there is standing room only. Learn more here.
