36 miles, 2400 ft up, 7700 ft down
Hell Ride is a point-to-point “adventure” that starts with a shuttle ride deep into the San Bernardino Mountains up Hwy 38. It starts at South Fork and then follows the Santa Ana River Trail (SART) all the way back to Redlands. The ride has been going on for over 20 years now, and every year riders from all over SoCal come out to participate in this event.
The ride is very challenging, but includes breathtaking views and awesome single track the whole way. It’s essentially “self-guided”, but we will have a support station about half-way with food and water. A number of riders from the local bike shops (Don’s Bikes, Cyclery USA and Bear Valley Bikes) will also be out there to help everyone find their way back. At the end of the day, we meet at Hanger 24 for beverages, food, a great raffle and a little story telling. Whether your are new or a 20 year veteran, this ride offers something for everyone.
This year we have bus shuttles again. This includes a worry-free ride for you and your bike to the top of South Fork and this also includes 5 raffle tickets for afterwards. Tickets go on sale September 21 at 8:00pm.
Is it really that hard?
Yes! As the name suggests, the ride is over 36 miles, with about 2500 ft of climbing and 7300 ft of descending, and it can be quite “hellish” for some. The climbs are tough and you have to be ready to pedal your bike all day. It always starts off pretty darn cold, and snow is always a possibility, but it usually warms up quickly as we make our way back to the valley. Towards the end of the ride the trails become a bit more ‘raw’. There can be a lot of sharp bushes so we would recommend you come prepared with long sleeves and/or socks to protect your arms and legs. On average it takes most riders 4-5 hrs, but some riders will take up 6 or 7 hours to complete the course. We would not recommend that you bring a beginner rider on this ride.
